Nice/Nizza Street Photography (Leica M6) – Part II: Old town, harbour & more

After portraying the famous Promenade des Anglais and the city’s large park in my previous post, this one will be showing photographs from the harbour area and old town.

Nice is a very diverse city. I do wish I’d had more opportunity (and time) to explore areas of the city which are not part of every city guide, but I know I will be going back. The photographs of the city of Nice that I’ve taken this summer and presented here were an attempt to document the parts of the town, which you will read about in guidebooks, in a direct, unedited, and honest way. I was trying to portray what I was seeing as I was walking down the Promenade, sitting at a bench in the park, or roaming the harbour area. The liveliness, diversity, and beauty of a city which is world-famous for its glamour and shine, while offering so much more to the curious and open mind.

Just before the Promenade terminates at its north east end, there are rocks sticking out below the street into the turquoise green sea. Teenagers jump off the rocks into the sea. When resurfacing, they quickly swim off before waves overpower them and crush them against the cliffs.

At the east end of the Promenade is where the city port lies. Ferries, fishing boats, and fancy yachts dock here, and in the early afternoon, when the ferries stop by, it is the busiest part of the city.

Turning into the city by the port, approaching the back end of the old town, the facades of the buildings start to get more intricate and authentic.

On the south end of the old town, in the cours Salya, is the market. Vendors offer flowers, fruit, soaps, spices, African art, fresh fish, and much more.

The streets of Nizza are a universe to discover for any street photographer. No matter where in the city you are, the next photograph is not far. Keeing your eyes peeled, and your finger on the trigger, always be ready to snap away. Ideally you can shoot using zone focusing – set your camera on F/8 and a fast shutter speed, you won’t have to waste time focusing. This way, you can hopefully freeze the moment in time as your eye perceives it.

These were my photographs from the city of Nice. In my view, one the most photogenic cities in the world.
